A few days ago, we found that the mother of Donald, a boy we have been helping to
support in Ghana, had left Donald in the care of a friend and had disappeared. Our
friend John found the little boy sick, weak, and sleeping in a small room by
himself.
John immediately took Donald to the hospital where he was admitted. The doctors
said that he needed to stay there for several days so that he could receive
treatment. It was heartbreaking to think that a year-old boy had to be left all by
himself in a hospital full of strangers but there was no alternative.
The good news is that John visited the hospital on the morning of the 9th and was
allowed to take Donald home with him. It seems the boy had malaria, a cold
(possibly meaning the flu) and was suffering from an infection from a continuing
problem he has had with a poorly done circumcision shortly after he was born. But
he was released and is now back with the woman who had been caring for him, this
time with sufficient money to give him the kind of care he needs. He is still weak
and recovering but at least he has received treatment, and he should be okay.
We are still trying to work out something for Donald's long-term care, assuming his
mother doesn't come back for him (or even if she does) but for now everything is
arranged so that he will be taken care of and is safe.
